Stem Cell Therapy for Neurological Disease

Stem cells have been found in most organs of the adult human body. They have the potential to self-renew or multiply, and to regenerate or repair damaged tissues. After 150 years of research into how an organism grows, scientists are now discovering how stem cells may be used in medicine to improve health.

Professor Simon Koblar is a neurologist and neuroscientist. In this seminar he will discuss stem cell biology and its potential use in therapy to treat a range of neurological diseases, including Multiple Sclerosis, Parkinson Disease, Spinal Cord Injury, Motor Neuron Disease, and in particular, Stroke.

Simon has spent the last ten years researching stem cells from adult human teeth and how these cells may be used to treat Stroke. His research has shown that dental pulp stem cell therapy helps to restore lost limb function in a rat model of stroke.

Based on this research, Simon will discuss why it is time to plan for a clinical trial in Adelaide to treat local Stroke survivors who have a disability.
